• LLD Linguists Secure NSF Funding To Document A Severely Endangered Language

  • Half of the world’s languages are on the verge of extinction 和 linguists are busy trying to document as many such languages as possible. LLD语言学家也在这样做 their part, with the help of a three-yeargrant for $150,000 from the Documenting Endangered Languages Program at the National 科学 Foundation to document Domaaki, a severely endangered language of Pakistan spoken in the Hunza 和 Nager valleys of the Karakoram mountain range, which runs along the border of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, 和 China. 克里斯Donlay, a language documentation specialist, will provide intensive training in linguistic fieldwork to graduate students 和 faculty at the Institute of Languages of Azad Jammu 和 Kashmir University in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan. 新培训的确立 will interview the few remaining speakers of Domaaki, record their conversations, stories 和 songs, transcribe 和 annotate the texts, 和 build a digital corpus of the language under the supervision of 克里斯Donlay (Co-PI) 和 Roula Svorou (PI).
